Morning mist curled through the gorge as golden leaves shimmered against six-hundred-foot cliffs.
The Genesee roared below, carving poetry into stone while rainbows danced in the spray.
Each turn of the trail revealed a living painting — silence, sound, and color in perfect rhythm.
At Letchworth, nature didn’t just show itself — it spoke, and I listened.
Location & Overview
Letchworth State Park is located in western New York, in Livingston and Wyoming counties, roughly 35 miles (≈ 55 km) southwest of Rochester.
The park is often called the “Grand Canyon of the East” because the Genesee Gorge cuts a deep valley with cliffs up to about 600 feet (≈ 180 m) high in places.
The park covers around 14,300–14,400 acres (≈ 5,800 hectares).
Getting There from Mississauga / BramptonApproximate drive: from Brampton/Mississauga into New York across the border (via Peace Bridge or Rainbow Bridge) and then to the park.
Distance: sources estimate ~249 km from Toronto to the park, taking ~3 hours in good conditions.
Note: Being in Canada (Brampton/Mississauga) you will cross the US-Canada border—bring passport, valid travel documentation, allow for border wait times.
Suggested route: QEW → Niagara Bridge → I-90 / I-190 or local NY routes towards Portageville / Castile entrances of the park.
Entry & Access
Vehicle use fee: USD $10 per vehicle (car/truck/van/motorcycle) at the main entrances.
Gate hours and fee collection: Fees typically collected between ~9 am-5 pm during the busier season (May–October) at main west-side entrances.
Important: Some east‐side entrances may have no fee but give limited access to main falls/trails.
What to Do & Highlights
Waterfalls: The park’s three major falls on the Genesee River:
Upper Falls ~70 ft (≈ 21 m) high.
Middle Falls ~107 ft (≈ 33 m) high.
Lower Falls ~70 ft (≈ 21 m) high.
Cliff & gorge views: The rock walls of the gorge rise up to about 550–600 feet in some sections.
Trail network: Over 66 miles (≈ 106 km) of hiking/biking/winter trails.
Key viewpoints: Inspiration Point, Archery Field Overlook, Portage Bridge rail trestle over Upper Falls.
Other activities: Hot-air balloon rides, white-water rafting on the Genesee River, nature centre, picnic areas.
Travel Time Inside & Walking Difficulty
Recommended visit time: 4-5 hours to cover the falls, viewpoints, trails, rest, photo stops.
Typical route: Park at the falls area (e.g., Middle Falls / Glen Iris Inn lot). Walk the gorge trail to Middle Falls, then continue to Upper and/or Lower Falls (depending on time).
Distance: A simple loop from Middle → Upper Falls → return can be around 2-3 miles (≈ 3.2-4.8 km). A full descent to the river bank and across the footbridge at Lower Falls can add more. For example, a trail listed as 4.8 miles (≈ 7.7 km) with ~1,023 ft elevation gain was noted for “Lower Falls via Portage Bridge”.
Step estimate: If one descends stairs (for example ~125 steps at one section) and walks several km, an estimate of ~5,000-7,000 steps (depending on route) is realistic.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Trails are well-maintained, paved or gravel in many areas; some stair sections and inclines near the gorge edge. Not technical hiking gear-only but good walking shoes advised.
Elevation/cliff drop: The sources note up to ~600 ft cliffs; many trails stay atop rim but some allow descent. Where to Start & Suggested Route
Recommend entering via the Portageville/Castile (Falls Area) entrance for direct access to Upper, Middle and Lower Falls.
Start at parking lot near Glen Iris Inn / Middle Falls. Walk the Gorge Trail toward Upper Falls.
Then return toward Middle Falls overlook; after refreshments you can extend to Lower Falls (via stairs) if time & energy permit.
Pick up map at visitor centre or online before arrival.
Time your visit for morning light at Middle Falls for fog/mist + fall colours.
Best Time to Visit
Fall (late Sept – October): Ideal for foliage, mist in the gorge, soft morning light, quieter trails early.
Spring: High water volume in falls, lush green.
Summer: Full facility access, comfortable weather though may be busier.
Winter: Frozen falls scenery, but some trails/roads may close or be icy — special gear may be needed.
For leaves in western New York: usually peak mid- to late-October (can vary yearly).
Additional Practical Tips
Early arrival recommended if you want parking near falls during peak season or weekends.
Bring layers: gorge micro-climate cooler, mist near falls.
Cameras/tripods useful — vistas change quickly with light & mist.
Border crossing: have passport, allow for customs delay.
Fuel up (gas, snacks) before entering park; some services inside may be limited/outside main season.
Follow “carry in – carry out” policy: pad trash/pack-out your waste.
